Should I use GIFs on my website? | |
In short... NoWhen you upload a picture to your website, we create different sizes of it so that your site loads quickly. This way, visitors see the best-quality image without slowing things down. However, GIFs don’t compress as well as regular images, so their file sizes can get really big. For example, a normal image that’s 4000 pixels wide can be reduced to just 200KB. But with a GIF, each frame (or "slide") in the animation takes up that much space. So, if a GIF has 10 frames, it could be 2MB in size. Now, imagine you have 10 GIFs on a single page—together, they could be 20MB! That’s a lot of data, and it can make your website load very slowly. Since people expect fast websites, using too many GIFs can hurt performance. On top of that, GIFs can only show 256 colors, which means they won’t look as sharp or clear as other image types. Because of these reasons, it’s best to avoid using GIFs when possible.
If you absolutely want to use animated GIFsYou can upload them to your website for example, when listing products. However, they must be under 3MB in size. If your GIF exceeds this limit, you can use free online tools to make it smaller. One option is this website -:
Keep in mind that GIFs don’t scale as well as traditional image formats like PNG or JPG. To prevent them from appearing stretched on high-resolution screens, you may want to restrict your website’s width. This is optional and depends on your personal preference. If you’d like to adjust the width, follow these steps -: 1) Log in to your website manager. 2) In the left-hand menu, go to "Design, Colours & Layout", then select "Edit current theme". 3) In the right-hand menu, under "General", look for "Website width" (If this option isn’t available, your theme doesn’t support width restrictions, so you can ignore these instructions as they won't be applicable). 4) Under "Restrict width on large screens?", select "Yes". 5) Click "Save". |
